Mantua is a census-designated place (CDP) in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. Mantua is a bedroom community serving as a suburb to the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Most of the homes in Mantua were built between the 1950s and the 1980s. The population was 7,135 at the 2010 census.[3]
Geography
Mantua is located in central Fairfax County at 38°51′7″N 77°15′28″W / 38.85194°N 77.25778°W (38.852012, -77.257675).[4] It is bordered to the west by the city of Fairfax, to the north by Merrifield, to the east by Woodburn, to the southeast by Wakefield, and to the south by Long Branch. The northern border of the CDP follows U.S. Route 50 (Arlington Boulevard), the southern border follows Virginia State Route 236 (Little River Turnpike), and the eastern border follows Prosperity Avenue. The Capital Beltway (Interstate 495) is 2 miles (3 km) to the east, and downtown Washington is 14 miles (23 km) to the east.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the Mantua CDP has a total area of 2.4 square miles (6.2 km2), of which 0.023 square miles (0.06 km2), or 0.91%, is water.[3] Accotink Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River, flows through the northern part of the CDP, and Crook Branch, a tributary of Accotink Creek, flows through the southern part.
Demographics
As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 7,485 people, 2,627 households, and 1,938 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,090.4 people per square mile (1,194.2/km²). There were 2,723 housing units at an average density of 1,124.3/sq mi (434.4/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 78.78% White, 1.96% African American, 0.41% Native American, 13.61% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.93% from other races, and 2.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.83% of the population.
There were 2,627 households out of which 35.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.7% were married couples living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 21.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.15.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 92.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.7 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $88,367, and the median income for a family was $103,277. Males had a median income of $70,899 versus $45,184 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $37,672. About 2.3% of families and 3.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.8% of those under age 18 and 3.1% of those age 65 or over.
