Mustafa Şentop (born 6 August 1968) is a Turkish politician from the Justice and Development Party (AKP) who has served as the Member of Parliament for İstanbul's third electoral district since 12 June 2011. He was first elected in the 2011 general election and was re-elected in June 2015. Between 2012 and 2015, he served as the deputy leader of the AKP, with responsibility for election campaigns.
Early life and career
Mustafa Şentop was born on 6 August 1968 in Tekirdağ. He graduated from İstanbul University Faculty of Law and obtained both a masters degree and a doctorate in the field of public law at Marmara University. In 1993, he began working as a member of teaching staff at the Marmara University Faculty of Law. He became a doctor in 2002, a docent in 2005 and a professor in 2011. He also gave lectures at Fatih University, Maltepe University, Işık University, Doğuş University and İstanbul Commerce University. He became the Vice Dean of Marmara University, as well as a member of the executive board of both the Faculty Board and Executive Board. He also served as the President of the Economic and Social Research Centre (ESAM) İstanbul Branch. He is married with four children.[1]
Political career
Şentop was elected as a Justice and Development Party (AKP) Member of Parliament for İstanbul's third electoral district in the 2011 general election. During the 4th Justice and Development Party Ordinary Congress held on 30 September 2012, he was elected to the party's Central Executive Committee (MYK) and became the deputy leader responsible for election campaigning.[2] He lost his position during the 5th Justice and Development Party Ordinary Congress three years later on 12 September 2015.[3] He was re-elected as an MP in the June 2015 general election.[4]
