Novato–Downtown is a former and future train station in Novato, California. Passenger service is expected to recommence after the beginning of Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit revenue service.

History

The original Northwestern Pacific Railroad (NWP) Depot was built in 1916. Increased automobile ownership and highway construction led to a decline of rail travel in Marin County, thus leading to disuse of the facility as a passenger terminal in the 1940s.

Not part of the design for the original ten stations from the project's Initial Opening Segment, station plans were finalized in 2016 with the expectation to have the platform built by the time trains began operation. Funding is being wholly provided by the City of Novato, owing to the depot not being in the original SMART system.[1] The station will not receive full service, owing to its proximity to the Novato–San Marin/Atherton station.[1][2]
