Career
Thakur is the Secretary of Institute for Research and Documentation in Social Sciences (IRDS). IRDS has been raising many issues related with Human Rights violations which includes that of Binayak Sen, Seema Azad etc.[3][4][5][6] Similarly, National RTI Forum, with its associates and volunteers working in different states of India,[7] is regularly involved in many activities related with RTI including protests,[8] judicial interventions,[9][10] advocacy,[11][12] writing books[13] etc. It is also pursuing the cause of awarding Padma awards to Manjunath Shanmugam and Satyendra Dubey, two bright, young and dedicated young persons who had fought against corruption and were murdered in the way.[14][15][16]
She is a former member of the Aam Aadmi Party.[17][18]
Due to repeated petitioning for various public causes, the Allahabad High Court imposed a condition on Thakur to the effect that she should deposit in the court Rs 25,000 with every PIL (Public Interest Litigation) she files. If the court were to find her petition to be genuine, the money she had deposited would be returned to her otherwise it would be confiscated. As of August 2014, Thakur had filed 86 PILs in the High Court. Thakur then approached the Indian Supreme Court to appeal the High Court order, but the Supreme Court upheld the Allahabad High Court order, observing that it was only to ensure that she wouldn't henceforth file frivolous petitions.[19]
As a writer
In 2010, it was announced that Thakur is writing books on Mayawati and Mulayam Singh Yadav, where her aim would be to study them in a holistic manner.[20]
