Raeesh Maniar (Gujarati: રઇશ મણિયાર) is a Gujarati language ghazal poet, translator, playwright, columnist, comperer, lyricist and script writer from Gujarat, India. His significant works includes Kafiyanagar (1989), Shabda Mara Swabhavma J Nathi (1998) and Ghazal Nu Chhandovidhan (2008). He has written lyrics for several Gujarati and Hindi language movies. The Indian National Theater, Mumbai awarded him the Shayda Award of 2001 and Kalapi Award of 2016 for his contribution in Gujarati ghazal poetry.[1]
Early life
Maniar was born on 19 August 1966 in Killa, a village of Pardi taluqa of Valsad district. He took his schooling from D.C.O, Killa in 1980 and St. Xavier's School, Surat in 1983. He completed his MD (Pediatrics) in 1991 from Surat Medical College.[2]
Maniar married to Ami Patel in 1989. He currently lives in Surat.[3]
Career
Maniar started to write poems 1977. In December 1981, his poem came out for first time in Gujarat Samachar. He started his career as a Children Psychiatrist in 1993 at Surat. In 2013, he left his practice as a docter and started to work for full-time as a comperer, playwright, lyricist and script writer.[3]
Maniar has written songs for Gujarati films like Kevi Rite Jaish (2012) and Aa To Prem Chhe. In 2013, he penned the background song, Thai Dod Dod Gali Vaat Mod for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela and made his debut as a lyricist in Hindi cinema. He had also written the script for the popular Gujarati play Antim Aparadh.[1] The Sandesh newspaper publishes his column Aras-paras Ni Academy on every Sunday. Formerly, he wrote column, Vaat Nu Vatesar, in the same newspaper from 2010 to 2014. He also writes column, Paraspar, for NavGujarat Samay since 2014.
Works
Maniar known for his ghazals and hazals (humorous ghazals) in Gujarati literature. Kafiyanagar, his first ghazal anthology was published in 1989, followed by Shabda Mara Swabhavma J Nathi (1998) and Nihaalto Ja (2006). He has translated some of the works of Kaifi Azmi, Gulzar, Sahir Ludhianvi and Javed Akhtar. His other significant works includes Mareez: Astitva Ane Vyaktitva (2001; criticism of the works and life of Mareez), Ghazal: Rup Ane Rang (2006; criticism of the form and construction of ghazal) and Ghazal Nu Chhandovidhan (2008; research articles on metres of ghazal). His Children's science works published as Baaluchher Ni Barakhadi.[3]
Recognition
Maniar won the Shayda Award (2001) instituted by Indian National Theater, Mumbai. In 2002, he awarded by Gujarati Sahitya Parishad for best translation of Gulzar's poetry into Gujarati. His Children's science works, Baaluchher Ni Barakhadi, awarded by B.N Mankad Prize (2nd) of 1998-99 instituted by Gujarati Sahitya Parishad.[2] He received Kalapi Award in 2016.
