Roads in Armenia

Roads are the main transport network in Armenia. With an underdeveloped railway network, principally due to its difficult terrain, the road system is of vital importance for the development of the country. Its role is important both with national and international traffic.
The total length of the Armenian road network is 7,637 km (4,745 mi), 96.7% of which is asphalted. For every 1,000 km2 (390 sq mi) of national territory, there are 258 km (160 mi) of roads, which is a very low average for European standards.

The first roads as we conceive them in a modern perception, appeared in Armenia in the 19th Century.

Motorways
Armenia has recently developed a network of multilane motorways, difficult to further expand due to limited resources and difficult terrain conditions. Motorways are not differentiated in number from two-lane main highways, thus sharing the same road number with the highway they belong to. However, there might be smaller regional roads running parallel to them.
Մ1- Runs from Yerevan until Ashtarak. Length: 26 km (16 mi)
Մ2 - Runs from Yerevan until Ararat. Length: 50 km (31 mi)
Մ4 - Runs from Yerevan until Tsavoyaugh. Length: 72 km (45 mi)
Մ5- Runs from Yerevan until Armavir. Length: 44 km (27 mi)
