Sacred Heart Academy High School is a parochial parish, Roman Catholic high school in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. It is located in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saginaw.
100% of 2014 graduates continued their education by enrolling in a college and/or university, and all students complete a community service requirement of 100 hours.
As a Catholic centered school, community service and faith-based education are emphasized.
Founding
Sacred Heart Academy was established in 1889 under the direction of former Notre Dame professor Fr. John Crowley, Order of the Holy Cross. Fr. Crowley invited a group of five Dominican Sisters from New York to run the school, most of whom also founded the Grand Rapids Dominicans.
Current School
The entire school is under the direction of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saginaw. Sacred Heart Academy is the only K-12 institution in the Diocese, only one of three high schools (the others being Nouvel Catholic Central High School and All Saints Central High School), and the only high school to be operated by one parish. Until 2015, Sacred Heart had at least one sister, nun, or priest on staff.
Construction
Sacred Heart Academy occupies two buildings, which were constructed in three phases. The original Academy was constructed in 1908 under the direction of architect Clarence W. Cowles, to which an expansion was added in 1955. The elementary school was added in 1964.[2] A recent expansion occurred in 2008; two new classrooms were constructed above the previously one-story elementary cafeteria.
Athletics
Sacred Heart competes in Class D of the MHSAA. Sacred Heart competes in baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, track, and volleyball as a member of the Mid-State Activities Conference (MSAC), and it competes in golf as a member of the Mid-Michigan Golf Conference.
Other Extracurriculars
Sacred Heart competes in Forensics, Language Arts, Model United Nations, Science Olympiad, and Technology Team as a member of the MSAC; it competes in quiz bowl as a member of the MSAC and the Catholic High School League.
