Safdarjung (Delhi)
Safdarjung area consists of mainly two localities in South Delhi, namely Safdarjung Enclave and Safdarjung Development Area (SDA).[1][2] There are several districts (called colonies) in Delhi located south to the tomb of Safdarjung, the second Nawab of Awadh, and an important administrator in the Mughal Imperial courts in Delhi, under Muhammad Shah in the 18th century.
Safdarjung Enclave
Safdarjung Enclave, developed by the Delhi Lease and Finance later DLF Limited after acquiring the farm lands from Humayunpur Village in the early 1960s under then Prime Minister Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. is located just south of the Ring Road and north of the Hauz Khas Deer Park. South of Hauz Khas village is Safdarjung Development Area (SDA), built in the 1960s as an extension south. Both colonies are primarily residential, and are bases for the affluent upper class. Safdarjung Enclave has different block such as A-1, A-2, B-1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7. Safdarjung Enclave from the east to west starts just after AIIMS Trauma Centre and ends before Bhikaji Kama Place on the inner ring road. From North to south it starts from Bhikaji Kama Place up to DLTA stadium and District Park. Krishna Nagar, Arjun Nagar and Humayun Pur also situated in the Safdarjung Enclave Delhi.
Safdarjung Club is situated just opposite the A-1 Block Market and near the Kamal Cinema. Safdarjung Enclave has a good number of Hotels to stay namely Hotel Africa Avenue, Park, Baljeet Lodge, Shreyans Inn,the JRD luxury boutique hotel etc. Car Manufacturers like Maruti, Mahindra, Hyundai, Ford etc. have their exclusive showroom in Safdarjung Enclave. The food joints like Red Chilli at Central Market A-2 Block, Rajindra Dhaba at A-1 Block Market, Cafe Coffee Day in B-7 Market are the most happening place of Safdarjung Enclave. The Deer Park and the District Park is the most beautiful place of attraction in Safdarjung Enclave. The leaders like Mr. Pankaj Agarwal, Mr. Shiv Lal Watwani, Retd. Air Marshal M.S.Bawa, Councillor Monty are very well known personalities in the area. Safdarjung Enclave falls under the Hauz Khas Assembly Constituency and Mrs. Kiran Walia, the former Health Minister in Delhi Government, represented this constituency. Safdarjung Enclave falls under the New Delhi Parliamentary Constituency and the former Central Government Minister of youth affairs Mr. Ajay Maken represented this area in Lok Sabha.
Safdarjung Enclave was one of the first colonies in Delhi to be built after Partition that did not include land grants for refugees from what is now Pakistan.
The airstrip next to Safdarjung's Tomb that occupies the area between it and Safdarjung Enclave, formerly Delhi's main airport, is now known as Safdarjung Airport and is the home of the Delhi Flying Club. Many official flights for the Central and State government also leave and arrive here rather than at Delhi's main airports Palam & Indira Gandhi International.
