Season chronology

The third season of Shameless, an American comedy-drama television series based on the award-winning British series of the same name by Paul Abbott, premiered on January 13, 2013, at Sunday 9:00 p.m. EST on the Showtime television network. Executive producers are John Wells, Paul Abbott and Andrew Stearn, with producer Michael Hissrich. The season concluded after 12 episodes on April 7, 2013. The shows season premiere brought in 2.00 million viewers, becoming the show highest rated episode ever to-date. The episode airing February 17, "The Sins of My Caretaker", received 1.31 million total viewers, its lowest rated episode of the season. The season finale scored 1.82 million viewers.

Overview

Fiona adapts to life with Jimmy when he moves into the Gallagher house. Jimmy has more pressing concerns however when Estefania's father makes him an accomplice in murder and forces him into a worrying situation. He has more shocks in store when he discovers that his father is secretly gay and in a relationship with Ian. Mandy and Lip deal with problems in their relationship- has Lip really been able to let Karen go?- while Mandy secretly does Lip's college applications for him. Meanwhile, Mickey is out of prison and becomes jealous on seeing Ian with other men. Kev and Veronica have a lot on their plate when Kev's wife Cheryl arrives. But there is more heartache for the couple when they discover Veronica is infertile and are forced to take an alternate route to parenthood. Sheila and Jody adapt to new parenthood and all its challenges, while Sheila is unhappy with their sex life and seeks Frank's unlikely help in convincing Jody to be more adventurous in the bedroom. And in a shock move, the Department of Family Services removes the Gallagher children with the help of an unlikely person, leaving a heartbroken Fiona to enlist Frank's help in getting them back.

Fiona tries to adapt to living with Jimmy after he moves in with her. Jimmy deals with the sudden appearance of Estefania's father. Estefania's father kills her boyfriend Marco in front of Jimmy, who's then forced to help dismember the body and dispose of it on a boat in the Great Lakes. Estefania's father wants Jimmy to stay married to her so she can become an American citizen. Frank wakes up in Mexico after hard partying and starts to make his way back home but is turned away at the border due to lack of papers, so he turns to being a drug mule to get through. After trying to steal a laser with Ian, Lip gets arrested and arraigned in bond court. Lip, Ian, Carl, and Mandy compete in a robot fighting competition with the stolen laser mounted on top of the robot. They win and put the $400 cash prize towards the past due property tax but, unknown by anyone else, Fiona puts $1,000 down on an upcoming night so she can be the club's promoter that night and hopefully make much more. Ian and Lloyd, Jimmy's dad, continue to meet up and have sex. Veronica and Kevin do live internet sex shows for money where he is Thomas Jefferson and she is his slave, Sally Hemings. Meanwhile, Sheila and Jody experience parental life with Karen's baby Hymie.

Fiona faces new challenges as a party promoter in the same club where she worked as a waitress; she ends up losing $100 for the night, which is good for a first time, but she only did that well because Lip tricked rich kids into coming there for a concert that didn't exist. Estefania's father has assigned Beto to watch over Jimmy's every move, causing Jimmy frustration. Lip's teachers and Mandy try getting Lip to prepare his resumé and application for college but he just continues to serve community service and hustle money to pay the house taxes. Frank staggers home and clashes with the rest of the Gallaghers due to his drunken antics; after trying to take care of Frank, showing him kindness and love, Debbie finally has enough of Frank's bad behavior, hitting him with a homemade weapon. Ian deals with the return of Mickey and tries to figure out if they're in a relationship. Veronica gets a surprise at her door in the form of Kev's wife. Sheila and Jody struggle to adjust to parental life with baby Hymie; they have Debbie babysit and even let Frank stay because he seems to quiet Hymie.

Fiona applies for a job as a cashier in a grocery store but has second thoughts after the store manager makes sexual advances towards her. Veronica then uses a hidden camera to catch the manager making advances towards her to blackmail him into giving Fiona the job with good hours. Sheila allows Frank to take baby Hymie to his doctor's appointment for her, but instead of taking him to the appointment Frank tries to use Hymie to scam a children's foundation for an autographed basketball to sell. When he finds out the foundation is for children with cancer he decides to use Carl, convincing Carl he might be dying from "cancer." Kev's wife Cheryl is trying to get him back by pretending her sister's child is hers and his. When she admits this, Veronica and her get into a physical fight and Veronica forces her to sign the divorce papers. Lip leads a crusade to take down sex offenders in the neighborhood after Debbie witnesses a man masturbating on the bus, but fails after he and his posse discover one sex offender they go after is a woman (Justine Lupe). He then decides to flirt with her and take a picture as evidence for the police; Mandy finds out and confronts her by persuading her to move out as she scares her with a dug grave in her yard. Jimmy spends time with Estefania (Stephanie Fantauzzi) creating false wedding photos in order to protect her from immigration services. When riding in a car Estefania puts Jimmy's hand between her legs and masturbates with it. Jimmy feels like he betrayed Fiona. Ian is confused when Mickey sleeps with a neighborhood girl. Mickey discovers Ian's relationship with Jimmy's father, Lloyd, and follows them to a bar where he attacks Lloyd after he calls Mickey Ian's boyfriend.

Mandy receives a call from her younger half-sister Molly whose mother has apparently just died. Lip convinces Mandy to retrieve Molly in Milwaukee to save her from the foster care system. (Molly is actually a boy, but was raised as a girl, which she doesn't understand.) Carl heads off to cancer camp, where restrictions on the camp's activities frustrate the kids. Debbie works on holding her breath longer underwater. A distraught Sheila asks Frank for advice on getting Jody to agree to use her fetish toys. Fiona gathers a group of co-workers to discuss the boss's sexual advances towards them. Jimmy pitches in the Gallagher Squirrel fund, then meets his father for a drink and learns he was kicked out and is getting a divorce from his mother. He also finds out his father's true sexuality after he brings him to the Gallagher's house, where Lloyd gets in bed with Lip whom he mistakes for Ian; Ian then finally reveals his relationship with him. Veronica and Kevin try having a baby.

A city employee notifies Fiona that the city will be doing sewer line work in the backyard, this is a problem because Aunt Ginger is buried somewhere in the backyard. Fiona makes Frank look for the body before the city digs up the yard. Fiona also deals with the animosity of her co-workers over not giving in to the sexual advances of the boss when all the rest of them do. Jimmy still struggles to deal with his father's true sexuality; he goes to Estefania for emotional support after getting into an argument with Fiona. Ian tries to avoid Lloyd (Jimmy's Dad) but Lloyd asks him to rob his house to get back certain things he wants, telling Ian he can keep whatever else he wants; Ian recruits Mickey and his cousins for the job. Veronica and Kev find out Veronica is infertile and approach her mother about being a surrogate. Lip has second thoughts about his relationship with Mandy. Carl returns from cancer camp and Debbie gets bullied at the local pool. Sheila starts to regret the path she's started down by using her fetish toys with Jody. She takes in a terminally ill nun who has taken a vow of silence, so Sheila feels safe confiding in her about her deviant behavior. The nun blogs about Sheila's behavior using her iPad. The Gallaghers get a visit by child protective services.

Fiona and Jimmy try to get the kids back after they are taken away by child protective services, even going so far as to attempt to track Monica down and to ask Veronica and Kev to apply to foster them. She ultimately gets Frank to agree to clean up and petition for their return. Fiona quits her job at the grocery store when the manager won't let her off to go find the kids. Frank gets Sheila to pose as Monica since the petition for custody requires signatures from both parents. Frank and Sheila must attend a parenting class in order to get the kids back; Sheila hopes that the class might help her understand why Karen ran away. Meanwhile Veronica and Kev continue their quest to have a baby. Veronica convinces Kev to have sex with her mother, as the artificial insemination was not working. Mickey's dad finds Ian and Mickey in a sexual position; he beats them both and then calls a prostitute to have sex with Mickey, forcing Ian to watch. At the end of the episode, Fiona finds out that Frank was the one who called child protective services.

Fiona prepares herself for her court hearing, having decided to attempt to get full custody of the Gallagher children. To better her chances, Fiona, Lip and Ian forge a will in which Aunt Ginger leaves them the house. She gets help from Veronica in getting a deceased body of an elderly woman to pose as the recently dead Ginger. Meanwhile Frank tries to clean up his antics. Jimmy deals with the sudden visitation by immigration and has sex with Estefania again. Sheila gets visited at her home by the biological teenage father of baby Hymie and his mother, who Sheila decides to give Hymie to. Shortly after, Karen returns home. Debbie runs away from her foster home after having to do illegal manual labor along with the other children there. Ian is avoided by Mickey after they were caught having sex by Mickey's father and having been beaten up as a result. Fiona finally faces Frank in court; the judge continues Frank's parental rights but declares Fiona the other legal guardian of the Gallagher children. Lip tries to file the forged will from Aunt Ginger for the house while in court, but finds out that a family relative by the name of Patrick filed an (equally forged) will earlier that supersedes theirs.

The Gallaghers try to come up with a plan on how to fight back on keeping the home after learning that cousin Patrick filed in a equally forged will; after many attempts fail Carl poisons Patrick to kill him but he survives. Fiona and Jimmy start their new jobs working with city waste which Jimmy quits but gets a job at a coffee shop. Frank gets kicked out of Sheila's home; he continues to attend court-ordered alcoholics anonymous class and makes friends with a fellow member as he decides to pose as his sponsor in order to have a place to stay. Come to find out the man was just looking for a sponsor because he wanted a friend, he isn't really an alcoholic. After a fight with Lip, which Karen instigated, Mandy moves out of the Gallagher home. He then visits Karen and they have sex. Sheila and Karen attend a down-syndrome support group. Sheila later learns from baby Hymie's other grandmother, Mrs. Wong, that Karen called her in order for them to take Hymie with them so she can return home. Veronica and Kev continue their quest on having a child as Veronica's mom, Carol, starts turning up the romance; she might be slowly developing feelings for Kev. When Patrick brings the police to evict the Gallaghers, Debbie claims he had sexually molested her. While he was being arrested Fiona starts negotiations for a 50-year lease at $500 per month down from the $1800 he originally wanted.

Fiona starts a new office job while Jimmy continues with his job at the coffee shop. After having a bad day, Jimmy considers returning to medical school. Frank continues his stay at the home of a member from alcoholics anonymous. He gets the idea of trying to get financial benefits under a domestic partnership program. When they're turned down he unknowingly starts a city campaign for gay rights. Because of all the publicity, his roommate's mother makes him move out. Lip and Mandy get into a fight due to Mandy apply to colleges for Lip and the return of Karen. After a possibly successful interview with M.I.T. and talking with Mandy, Lip realizes how good Mandy is for him and how bad Karen is. When Lip decides to break it off with Karen, Karen continues to try and win him back by all means possible, leading Mandy to run her over with her car. Ian finds out that Mickey is getting married and becomes upset. When he confronts Mickey and tells him that they love each other and are both gay, Mickey beats Ian up. Debbie skips a day from school and spends time with a depressed Sheila while babysitting Liam. Veronica and Kev continue their quest on having a child leading to questioning themselves on whether having their child circumcised.

Fiona continues her new office job including playing a job softball game. Jimmy breaks the news to her about returning to medical school; he also tells the news to Beto who says it'll be difficult to get Estefania to move with him. Frank continues his new found fame as a spokesperson for a gay rights movement including attracting an anti-gay rights group that wants to "cure" him of his homosexuality by giving him women to have sex with. With that promise, and getting double the pay and a better hotel, Frank scams both groups. Eventually, Frank is caught by the gay-rights group. The second time Lip visits Karen in the hospital he finds out from Sheila about the text message sent from his phone. He didn't send it but doesn't tell anyone yet. Karen responds to Jody's touch so he starts performing oral sex on her; then she recovers from her coma. Ian finds out from Mandy that the woman Mickey is marrying is the same woman he was forced to have sexual intercourse with when Mickey's dad found them having sex. He tells Lip, who advises him to try and move on. Veronica and Kev find out that her mother is pregnant. Jimmy tells Fiona he must go to Michigan to finish attending University of Michigan Medical School. He asks her about coming there to live with him and that the kids can come if she wants, leaving her in dismay. She doesn't want to be apart from him for a year.

Fiona contemplates finding another job so she can move to Michigan where Jimmy will be returning to medical school; Fiona receives a call and finds out Jimmy has only rented a studio apartment in Michigan, Fiona and Jimmy get into a large argument about their relationship and trust. Fiona tells him to find another place to sleep. Later on, Jimmy gets a surprise visit from Estefania's father who informs that Estefania is being deported by immigration, then boards his yacht leaving off to a unknown location, all the while seemingly fearing for his life. Frank spends a night sleeping on the train and convinces Carl to let him stay in the old family van when he has nowhere else to go. Frank and Carl bond over Frank's childhood story of theft, inspiring Carl to propose stealing belongings from the foster parents he was recently living with; the police arrive to arrest Carl but Frank takes the blame. Lip, having figured out Mandy was the one to run over Karen, seeks advice from Kev; Lip attempts to cautiously end things with Mandy, fearful of her reaction. Angered by witnessing Karen's deficiencies after returning from the hospital, Lip confronts her at Mickey's wedding where they break up. Ian confronts Mickey who is moments away from marrying the female he was forced to have sexual intercourse with and tries to convince him to not marry her; Mickey and Ian have sex, but to Ian's dismay, Mickey goes through with the wedding, causing Ian to drink excessively and reveal to Mandy he's been sleeping with Mickey. Fiona attends a camping trip by her boss with her family. While at the camping trip, Fiona nearly has sex with her boss, but instead calls Jimmy to admit he was right about moving to Michigan alone.

Frank wakes up in jail after being arrested the previous night then faints and wakes up in the hospital. While there, the doctor tells him that he has liver failure and advises him not to continue drinking; Frank ignored the doctor's advice. While drinking and bonding with Lip over him graduating during the day, he collapses at a skating rink sending him back into the hospital. Fiona tries convincing Frank to stop drinking for either himself or his kids so he'll live. Fiona assumes that Jimmy is avoiding her over the previous day and becomes distraught over wondering about his whereabouts, even reaching his dad Lloyd to ask him where he is. His dad tells her this is typical of Jimmy. As she is about to enter the house, she gets stopped by Beto who delivers to her money he says is from Jimmy, saying Jimmy said Fiona was too good for him. Ian enlists in the army (unbeknownst to the rest of the Gallaghers). Then, he visits Mickey one last time and tells him about his enlistment, leaving him shocked and emotional; Mickey displays his love with one word, "Don't". Ian then departs quietly in the morning and forges identification to pose as Lip. Veronica and Kevin join Veronica's mom, Carol, in a sonogram who both find out from her that she was already pregnant for twelve weeks. Carol admits she didn't want to be pregnant yet because she wanted the closeness to Veronica and Kev to continue; she wanted to be needed by them. Sheila says goodbye to Jody, Karen, and baby Hymie as they venture off on a trip and is left alone. She then has a few friends over for whom she showcases a few of the adult toy products that she is selling. The Gallaghers, Veronica, Kev, and Sheila throw a graduation party for Lip. Fiona gets promoted in her new job. Lip thanks Mandy for her help with getting into college. And, Frank decides to leave the hospital.

Development and production

On February 1, 2012, Showtime announced the series would be renewed for a third season.[13] The show's third season began shooting on June 27, 2012[14] and premiered on Sunday, January 13, 2013.[15]

Casting

Noel Fisher, Emma Greenwell and Zach McGowan have been promoted to series regulars for their roles as Mickey Milkovich, Mandy Milkovich and Jody Silverman. Laura Slade Wiggins was demoted to a recurring character for her role as Karen Jackson. After Karen gives birth to her son, Sheila and Jody decide to raise Karen's newborn son, Karen makes them choose between her and the baby so Karen decides to leave the house. Wiggins makes her first appearance back into the season in episode 7 titled "A Long Way From Home". Stephanie Fantauzzi, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Marguerite Moreau and Tyler Jacob Moore return in the third season as Estefania, Carol Fisher, Linda and Tony Markovich. Louise Fletcher appears as Peg Gallagher, the Gallagher's grandmother.
