Tsuen Wan Government Secondary School (TWGSS; Chinese: 荃灣官立中學 or 荃官 in short) is an English-language (EMI) co-education secondary school located at 70 Hoi Pa Street, Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong. The school building consists of the hall, the laboratory wing, the classroom wing, and the new wing (completed in 2003). Ms. Tang Suk Ching is the current principal of the school, beginning her term in September 2016.

History

The school was founded in 1961, as the earliest secondary school in the Tsuen Wan District. Today it is recognised as one of the leading schools in Hong Kong in terms of academic results. 11 September 1961 was a memorable day to TWGSS. On that day, TWGSS opened. The first campus site was in the newly established Hoi Pa Street Government Primary School, where sixty-eight boys and seventy-five girls were accommodated temporarily. In September 1963, however, due to the lack of classrooms available for S1-S3 levels, the school was separated into A.M. and P. M. session. 25 June 1964 was another meaningful day to our school because on that day, old boys and girls moved to the new campus and thus the whole-day school arrangement resumed. The opening ceremony of TWGSS was held on 25 November 1964. His Excellency the Governor, Sir David Trench, was invited to be the Guest of Honour to mark the opening of our school. A historical plaque of the grand opening ceremony could be found on the sidewall of the main lobby. On the Plaque, it is written " THE SCHOOL OPENED BY THIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR SIR DAVID C.C. TRENCH K.C.M.G., M.C. ON 25TH NOVEMBER 1964."

Academic results

Tsuen Wan Government Secondary School students are known for excelling in public examinations.

Historically, more students at the school have received 10 A grades on the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) (the highest grade possible on the HKCEE) than at any other secondary schools in Hong Kong. Out of over 572 secondary schools in Hong Kong, fewer than 30 have ever produced these so-called "10A" students. In particular, between 2000 and 2010, 8 Tsuen Wan Government Secondary School students have received 10 A's in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) and 14 students have received 9 A's, ranking ninth among all secondary schools in Hong Kong.

In the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE), more than 30 students have received 5 A's, 4 A's or 3 A's between 2000 and 2010. Tsuen Wan Government Secondary School received a relatively high number of A grades and A-C grades per student.

The stellar academic performance of Tsuen Wan Government Secondary School students has been reflected in its representation at many of the world's best universities. Many excellent Form 6 students continue their education at prestigious overseas institutions in the United States, the People's Republic of China and the United Kingdom, while most graduates enroll in prestigious local universities such as the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

TWGSS counts a total of 12 winners of the Hong Kong Outstanding Students Awards,[1] ranking seventh among all secondary schools in Hong Kong.

There are 4 houses, Bamboo (BA), Camphor (CA), Pine (PI) and Plum (PL). More than 30 clubs and societies of academic, service, sports or other interests are also organized.

Mr. Chin is the school's first Queen's Scout, the highest award in Scouting, and the only person who was bestowed the Queen's Scout Award by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in the entire history of the School's own Scout Group - the 14th Tsuen Wan Scout Group. Mr. Chin obtained his Pilot Licence when he was still studying in the school before he was old enough for his driving licence. He was appointed as the first Air Scout Commissioner of Hong Kong who developed and expanded Air Scouting in the territory and is the first one in Hong Kong entitled to wear the Scout's Pilot Wing badge. He is a long distance cross-country aviator who successfully completed the First 100 Horse Power Single Engine England to Hong Kong long distance cross-country flight in 1971/72 in a tiny Beagle Pup 100 light aircraft establishing 3 records; and the first Single Engine Hong Kong to Xian flight in 2009 setting a mile stone in the opening of the door for general aviation and private flying in China. He is also the pioneer clinical specialist in cochlear implant who switched on the first multi-channel cochlear implant patient in China and his expertise in cochlear implants and team building skills have contributed to the building up of cochlear implant centres in all major hospitals in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan serving millions of deaf people locally without going overseas. On Air Scouting, Mr. Chin is the first Air Scout Commissioner of Hong Kong who built up the foundation of Air Scouting in Hong Kong and his air scouting training system continued up to today. He is the founder of the 1661 Kowloon Group of Air Scouts, the founder of the 1064 Group of Venture Air Scouts as well as the founder of the 180th Kowloon Group of Air Scouts which is the first to adopt the concept of integration in air scouting to accept disabled and deaf persons to become air scouts. Mr. Chin is also the Commanding Officer of the Hong Kong Air Cadet Corps (HKACC)in the 1980s who founded the present HKACC Headquarters at Kai Tak as well as designed and set up the Officer Cadet Training Course (OCTC) which trained all its adult officers up to today. He contributed to the successful conversion of the HKACC from a private organisation to a charitable voluntary agency and NGO recognised and subvented financially by the Hong Kong Government. Mr. Chin is also a dedicated and experienced volunteer Flying Instructor of the flying clubs of Hong Kong for many years serving right up to today trained hundreds of aviation pilots. Mr. Chin is presently the founder and President of Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association of Hong Kong (AOPA-Hong Hong Kong) contributing to the promotion of general aviation, and advocating on aviation education and on behalf of the general aviation community of Hong Kong.
