There's Something About Remy: Based on a True Story is the debut solo studio album by American hip hop recording artist Remy Ma, released on February 7, 2006 through SRC Records, Universal and Terror Squad. The album's release date was the sixth anniversary of her former mentor Big Pun's death. The title and cover art is a reference to the 1998 film There's Something About Mary. The album sold 35,079 its first week [7] and sold a total 158,000 copies in the US, making Remy Ma the only female rapper to crack the Top 100 on Billboard's 2006 year-end Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.[8]
Background
Remy Ma and sister Kristin Devereaux grew up in Castle Hill Projects in the Bronx, New York, and often saw the consequences and terrors of her family's drug abuse with her own eyes. She was forced to take care of her little brothers and sisters at a young age and retreated from her home issues by writing poetry. Her reputation quickly grew around the Bronx and word eventually got to the late MC Big Pun of her and her work. After one meeting and a freestyle session, Pun immediately became her mentor.[9] Ma made her first appearances in the music industry on Big Pun's album Yeeeah Baby (under the name Remy Martin) on the tracks "Ms. Martin" and "You Was Wrong".[10]
After the death of Big Pun, rapper Fat Joe signed Smith to his imprint label under SRC and Universal and made her a member of Terror Squad. Following the success of Lean Back, which garnered Remy a Grammy nomination, Remy Ma released three singles from her debut album There's Something About Remy, the club-anthems "Whuteva", "Conceited" and "Feels So Good" The album moved 37,000 units in its opening week and 158,000 units within the first year, the album received reviews from XXL Magazine with XL to Rolling Stone and Vibe Magazine despite its low sales. Remy was frustrated at the way the album was being promoted by Universal and how the label wasn't releasing the right singles. With the solo albums lackluster debut, Smith decided to end her relationship with Fat Joe and the Terror Squad, breaking her deal with SRC/Universal in the process.
Singles
The lead single "Whuteva" was released on August 2, 2005. The music video premiered on December 2006 on via YouTube. It peaked 86 at Billboard Hot 100, 18 at Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, 12 at Hot Rap Songs and 79 at the US R&B Songs chart. The clean version of "Whuteva" was featured on the Parental Advisory and clean version of the album. The second single "Conceited" was released on December 13, 2005. The music video premiered on January 7, 2006 on VH1. It peaked 25 at Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, 17 at Hot Rap Tracks and 90 at Billboard Hot 100. The third single "Feels So Good" was released on April 25, 2006. It features American singer Ne-Yo. It peaked 101 at Billboard Hot 100 and 20 at Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.
