Brandon Markeith Marshall (born September 10, 1989) is an American football linebacker for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL). He was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the fifth round (142nd overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft, out of the University of Nevada, Reno.[1]

High school career

Born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, Marshall attended its Cimarron-Memorial High School, where he played football and was also a member of the track & field team. In football, he was named a first team All-Sunset Conference as a linebacker and tight end. Marshall was named second team all-state as a linebacker, and was also a two-time all-league on offensive and defense. For his career, on defense, he recorded 68 tackles, 13 sacks, 57 quarterback hurries, four fumble recoveries and one interception. On offense, Marshall recorded 10 touchdowns, while recording 691 yards as a running back and 95 receiving yards as a tight end.[2]

In 2016, Cimarron-Memorial retired Marshall's high school jersey on May 13.[3]

College career

Marshall attended the University of Nevada, where he majored in criminal justice. He redshirted as a freshman in 2007, and played in every game in 2008, starting six. For the season, he recorded 33 tackles, 8.5 tackles-for-loss, two sacks, one interception and two pass break-ups. In 2009, he started every game at outside linebacker, ranked third on the team with 61 tackles and fourth with 9.5 tackles-for-loss. Marshall also recorded one sack one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and four pass break-ups. For the season he was named second team All-WAC by Phil Steele and was named fourth team. In 2010, Marshall started all 13 games and the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl. For the season, he finished sixth on the team with 63 tackles. He also recorded eight tackles-for-loss, one sack and two interceptions.[2]

Jacksonville Jaguars

Marshall was selected in the fifth round (142nd overall) of the 2012 NFL draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was released on October 27,[6] re-signed on October 30,[6] and released on November 1.[6] He was signed to the team's practice squad on November 5 and promoted to the active roster on December 18.[7] He ended up being released on August 30, 2013.[8]

Denver Broncos

Marshall was signed to the Denver Broncos' practice squad on September 2, 2013.[8][9] On December 24, he was promoted to the active 53-man roster after placing Von Miller on injured reserve.[10]

Marshall was promoted to the Broncos' starting lineup during Week 2 of the 2014 season, replacing the injured Danny Trevathan.[11][12] The following season, Marshall started all 16 games, finishing second on the team in tackles.[13] On February 7, 2016, Marshall won his first Super Bowl after the Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers 24-10 in Super Bowl 50.

On June 14, 2016, Marshall and the Broncos agreed to a four-year, $32 million contract extension.[14]

On September 8, 2016 Marshall became the third NFL player to join in protest of American police brutality and racism by kneeling during the national anthem before the season opener against the Carolina Panthers.[15] As a result, on September 10, Air Academy Federal Credit Union dropped an advertising endorsement deal with Marshall.[16] On September 14, 2016, Marshall was fined $24,309 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Cam Newton.[17]

Personal life

Marshall is the son of Barbara Marshall. He has an older sister, Sandra, and an older brother, Marcus.[2]
