Netaji Subhash Engineering College (Bengali: নেতাজী সুভাষ ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং কলেজ) or NSEC is a graduate and undergraduate engineering college of eastern India located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Established in 1998, it is situated at Techno City, Panchpota, Garia in the southern part of Kolkata. The institute is noted for its strong academic foundations and ranks as one of the top engineering colleges in the state of West Bengal.[1]
History
Netaji Subhash Engineering College (NSEC) was set up, keeping in mind the ideals of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, who contributed to the Indian Freedom Movement. Netaji believed that true independence could only stem from a strong base in education and technology. The college was set up in 1998 in collaboration with the Techno India Group and The Institute of Computer Engineers (India). The college started with three engineering courses and today is one of the largest self-aided engineering colleges in West Bengal. At its inception, the college was affiliated to the University of Kalyani. In 2002, the college was affiliated by the newly instituted West Bengal University of Technology.
Campus
Netaji Subhash Engineering College operates out of its suburban campus in Techno City, Kolkata, Garia in the southern part of Kolkata. The institute is connected to other parts of the city through both railways and roadways. The nearest railway station is the Garia railway station in the Sealdah-Sonarpur section of the Kolkata Suburban Railway and the nearest bus terminus is the Garia Station Bus Stand. In April 2008 the same accreditation was given for information technology.[7] The college was also selected for an educational grant from the World Bank in its Technical Education Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP) as one of the few institutes in West Bengal.[8] NSEC ranked Second in Project Implementation of TEQIP (following Jadavpur University which achieved first place in West Bengal).[9] The institute is regarded as one of the best in West Bengal based on the number of students who prefer this college over other private engineering colleges of the state.[10]
Ranking
There is no formal ranking system among the engineering colleges of West Bengal. However, several unofficial ranking systems place NSEC among the leading engineering colleges of West Bengal.[1][11][12] The college is foreseen to become one of the better engineering colleges in India in near future. However, at present, the college does not feature among the top 50 engineering schools in India.

Phoenix, the Official Tech Club
The history of PHOENIX, the official Tech Club of the college, dates back to 2006, when seven students formed a platform that would think beyond the academic courses that everyone studies in college. Thus began Phoenix — the Tech Club. Today, every student of NSEC is essentially a member of Phoenix and the Club is well known in other tech colleges of the state.
The functioning of Phoenix stands on its various pillars: The PR Team, the Creative Team, the Database Team, the Web Team, the C Team, the Photography Team etc. Today, besides organising the three big events (Avenir – the annual Tech Fest, Brainstormer – The Inter College Quiz Competition and Kurukshetra – the Intra College Debate Competition) Phoenix holds forums. Presently these are: The C Forum, The Robotix Forum, The SSPD forum and the Web Designing Forum. "Come, Let's Rise", is the motto of the club[14]
Wiki Academy
The first Wiki Academy of Kolkata was set up at the college in collaboration with Wikimedia Foundation, India. The event witnessed large scale participation of students from colleges and universities.
Nixal
Nixal – the GNU/Linux user group of Netaji Subhash Engineering College (NSEC) was formed by the college. The group was the brainchild of a student of the Computer Science & Engineering Department, Mr.Asis Biswas. Nixal was inaugurated by Richard Stallman on 19 February 2003. The group was formed to learn about and contribute to GNU/Linux and spread the message of free software movement. The group follows Open Source Software ethics. After 2005 the activities of NIXAL saw a decline but now it is being revived. Nixal now exists as an open-ended user group and promotes the free software movement through seminars and workshops(FOSS).

College Events
Apart from academic events, the college calendar has a number of other major events:
Freshers' Welcome
Blossoms, the Freshers' Welcome Party was instituted in 2002 to introduce first year students to college life. Blossoms had seen students' performances as well as bands like Fossils, Eshaan, Colors, Cactus and other Bangla Bands. It was discontinued in 2013 owing to lack of approval from the authorities. Since 2016, a small segment has been introduced in the annual cultural fest to welcome the first year undergraduate students.
Annual Tech Fest
The Annual Tech Fest Avenir is one of the earliest Tech Fests of Kolkata was set up with help from Kshitij of Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.[16] The tech fest has seen participants from almost all major engineering colleges of West Bengal. It started in 2003 with a participation of 100 people. Over the years it has grown enormously with Avenir 2014 seeing participants count of over 4000 from all major engineering colleges of the state.[17]
Annual Cultural Fest
Mesmerizer, the annual cultural fest of NSEC was often regarded as one of the well-regarded college fests of Kolkata. It used to be a bigbudget show sponsored by MNCs like IBM, Wipro, Air India, Coca-Cola and Hero-Honda. The cultural program constituted of a blend of rock and classical music. Incepted in 2002, the first fest saw performances from Chandrabindoo, Nachiketa, Cactus and Bhoomi. Reunions
In the 18 years since its inception, there has never been a formal alumni association of the college, nor any formal alumni reunions. However, since 2015, various departments, on their initiative, have set up formal alumni associations and have held reunions/interactions with alumni of the department.

Student Organisations
The college had once been a hotbed of student politics in the early years of the New Millennium. There was a prominent student body on the campus, affiliated to the Students' Federation of India who used to interact with the college management to negotiate student rights and general improvements on infrastructure and campus recruitment. Since 2011, there have been no student organisations, apart from the student-founded Tech Club Phoenix and the Departmental Alumni Associations formed by the students in some of the departments.
CSE Alumni Association
The CSE Alumni Association is a platform for Alumni, Students & Faculty of CSE department to connect & interact. It was formed to engage the CSE department as well as its global community to support and advance the program’s excellence. The association organizes different alumni activity like seminars/talks all around the year.[19] The Association also organizes its annual reunion, "Melange" in the month of October every year.[20]
ECE Alumni Association
The ECE Alumni Association is a voluntary organization of the faculty, ex-students and present students of the Department. It was formed to foster enhanced interaction between the former and present students of the department.
