This is a list of earthquakes in 1936. Only magnitude 6.0 or greater earthquakes appear on the list. Lower magnitude events are included if they have caused death, injury or damage. Events which occurred in remote areas will be excluded from the list as they wouldn't have generated significant media interest. All dates are listed according to UTC time. Indonesia and China in particular had the main bulk of the activity in this year. Indonesia saw five of the 13 magnitude 7.0+ events. China on the other hand had six earthquakes which resulted in substantial numbers of deaths during the year.

- A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the Batu Islands, Indonesia on January 2 at a depth of 30.0 km. This was an aftershock of a much larger event which struck on December 28, 1935.[2]
- A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Narino Department, Colombia on January 9 at an unknown depth. Some property damage and 250 deaths were caused.[3]
- A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Santiago del Estero Province, Argentina on January 14 at a depth of 605.0 km.[4]
- A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck Vanuatu on January 14 at a depth of 25.0 km.[5]

- A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia on August 23 at a depth of 50.0 km. Nine people were killed and 20 more hurt. Some damage was reported.[72][73]
