- A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck the Chinese side of the Yellow Sea on January 8 at a depth of 20.0 km.[2] Many homes were destroyed especially in Jiangsu Province, China.[3]
- A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck to the north of Iceland on January 22 at a depth of 0.0 km.[4]
- A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck north of Tobago on January 23 at a depth of 100.0 km.[5]
- A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck southeast of the Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia on January 30 at a depth of 0.0 km.[6]
- A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Vanuatu on February 3 at a depth of 0.0 km.[7]
- A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Vanuatu on February 4 at a depth of 0.0 km.[8]
- A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off south coast of Honshu, Japan on February 12 at a depth of 350.0 km.[9]

- A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Fiji on April 20 at a depth of 330.0 km.[16]
- A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Vanuatu on May 1 at a depth of 80.0 km.[17]
- A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck northeast of San Jose, Costa Rica on May 4 at an unknown depth. At least 700 people were killed and there was extensive damage particularly at Cartago.[18]
- A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck Bristol Bay, Alaska on May 13 at a depth of 100.0 km.[19]
- A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the Kuril Islands, Russia on May 22 at a depth of 35.0 km.[20]
- A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the northern East Pacific Rise on May 31 at a depth of 0.0 km.[21]
- On June 1 two earthquakes struck Vanuatu. The first was a magnitude 7.3 at a depth of 80.0 km.[22] This was followed less than an hour later by a magnitude 7.1 quake. This event also had a depth of 80.0 km.[23] As the events were of similar magnitude, and so close in time to each other they could be considered a doublet earthquake.

- A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the Alboran Sea south of Spain on June 16 at a depth of 35.0 km.[25]
- A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Tanna (island), Vanuatu on June 16 at a depth of 100.0 km.[26]

- A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck Bouira Province, Algeria on June 24 at a depth of 33.0 km. Twelve people died and some damage was reported.[28]
- A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands, New Zealand on June 29 at a depth of 0.0 km.[29]
- A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands, New Zealand on June 29 at a depth of 0.0 km. This event was further to the northwest than the stronger earlier event. Whilst this was probably too far away to be considered an aftershock it was likely triggered by the earlier quake.[30]

- A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck northern Mindanao, Philippines on December 30 at a depth of 60.0 km. Some damage was reported in the area.[60]
